I just started on Steam but I've played about 120 hours on Switch and I never got the feeling I was missing anything by playing alone.
It can sometimes be a little more tedious than playing with other people, of course, especially with things like watering massive fields of crops. But there are plenty of things to keep you interested, and putting on music or a podcast or something is good for when you're doing the more tedious stuff.
I made the mistake to buy the game on GOG, which is no longer DRM-Free without clauses ifs and buts and it demands the "completely optional" GOG client, in order to play Multi; so, i insist in going fully solo, at all times... That is, until curiosity gets the better of me and sit down to do all the wetwork, of port-forwarding, to force Multi myself.
It's great fun. Totally legit solo experience. Clean and no-nonsense. Recommend and approve!
Whether or not you're someone who prefers to play alone, or with others is of course up to you.
