What do people prioritise to get completed in the 1st year?
For me it's:
1. Fully Upgraded bag pack
2. Tools upgraded to gold with priority on pickaxe and axe then the rest
3. Farm buildings

What about you all?

They can die without water. I missed a day of watering due to a festival event and clint was upgrading my watering can and one of my plots withered.

I've had watered crops, under iridium sprinklers, wither. Very rarely though.

I quite frequently use a 25% profit margin, so ... my aims are a bit more modest (than some):

First backpack upgrade (24 slots)
Steel pick, steel axe
Greenhouse.
Mine carts.
Reach at least flour 80 in the mines.

Whatever gets you to at least 30000G/week semi-passive income is fine. Earning less by the end of Year 1 will start biting you in the rear.
By default it means Greenhouse, sprinklers, seeds which don't need constant replanting and maybe some fertilizer.
Although if you got lucky with ticket prize machine you might want to specialize in different things. Free 4 Mushroom Stumps AND a free dryer from the machine, yum...

people here are planning on their optimized power run while I am year 2, still got the community center to finish, chill with my wife and plan on getting some kids, considering to slowly get some more sprinklers

the only thing I prioritize in this game is having fun :P

I usually try to reach the bottom of the mines before the end of Year 1. :kaze_ruby_gem:

Everyone is playing for fun, it's a game.

My year one goal when I play is to get the community centre completed about 1-2 weeks before Winter starts. Then you can ignore the 1st Winter entirely.

Both backpack upgrades, all iron tools, first house upgrade, all forage bundles and some others, and Iridium Rod if I can manage it, but I don't always. I focus on CC starting in year 2. Much less pressure that way. Year 1 is just a casual preparation year.

A usual year looks like this for me:

Spring: Plant 10-20 parsnips, and 1 of each of everything else 'cept cauliflower (9 of those), hoping to get 5 goldstar parsnips by the end of the month for CC. If it rains, go fishing in the river near Jodi's house (I have the skip minigame mod). Otherwise, do mine as much as possible. Get coop and barn up ASAP, buy 1st bag upgrade ASAP, 2nd only after the coop.

Summer: 30-40 blueberry plants, 9 melons, 1 of everything else for crops (5-10 corn and wheat, too), make sure to hit any rain-required fish when it rains, continue the mine. Usually get Floor 100 around first week-ish. Floor 120 is totally optional, don't need it until I'm ready to go further. Try to get Big Coop and Big Barn by the middle of Summer, and also the 2nd backpack upgrade. Try to squeeze at least one silo in there too.

Fall: This is where most of the magic happens, lots of growth. Should be able to get Q-Sprinklers before Fall starts, so I want 12-20 Q-sprinklers, all of them Cranberries except for 9 pumpkins and 1 of each of everything else. Deluxe Barn, Deluxe Coop should happen by the end of the season, easy. Walleye is prioritized over everything else if/when it rains.

Winter: CC should be done except for Snow Yam, Crocus and Nautilus Shell, unless I got lucky and saw those on the Merchant earlier in the year.

Ginger Island should be unlocked by the end of the season.

You can put Winter Roots into the seed maker to get Winter seeds - which can be grown in the greenhouse as soon as you get it ;) The shell yes, has to be from either fish ponds or the travelling merchant

Same. sounds like a chore to try and max everything by year 1. :/

Everyone plays differently, to some its the challenge of doing perfection as fast as possible, and to others its just plodding away with no true goal.

Goals are really what keep many motivated, as many quit usually when they are reached as it means you are done with the game and can move onto the next.

If there was a goal that's even more in depth then perfection, say collect all the hats, those are for the more dedicated players.

Its why acing campaigns and the single player experiences in general is important :D Cause it gives us a place to quit and play other games once its completed.

You can also get the shell from Demetrius in the mail, and the item that comes in the mail is chosen when you open the letter, not when the day starts.

I know this, because I accidentally started the game through Stardrop which didn't load all of my mods, got into the mine and discovered I was missing Freeze Time. I got a Nautilus Shell in the mail.

Exited the game, reloaded and Demetrius instead sent me an Amethyst.

But even if you do that, you're still limited by the acquisition of a pumpkin, which means unless you use speed-gro, you're not getting it done any sooner than Fall 13. Unless you get obscenely lucky and get that too on the Merchant. Surely at some point, though, you will run out of luck and there will be some item from Fall that you'll have to just wait for Fall for (quite likely a Walleye, which too can be found on the Merchant, but again, luck has its limits).

Frankly... My current goal is true 100%. I'm alternating between farming like crazy and partaking in other activities. Either is entertaining enough. Dunno, If 4,5 mil gold in 3,5 years is a lot or not. I could probably make more if I switched to Artisan and went full jar/keg/cask mode day after day, but... ehh... I'm more interested in quick funds, farm layout aesthetics and Island challenges atm.

Just do stuff, honestly. The appeal of the game is that your goal is whatever you want it to be.

Personally, I like getting the max backpack just for convenience, but I try to get that done in Spring of Year 1. Everything else it depends on what I feel like, or sometimes I'll try to play it like an RPG.
