You can verify the integrity of the game's files by right-clicking on the game’s title in your library list, then selecting ‘Properties’. Select ‘Installed Files’ from the list on the left side of the ‘Properties’ pop-up. Then just click on the ‘Verify integrity of installed files’ button and Steam will do the rest.
If you’re still having problems after verifying the game’s installed files, and you are 100% certain that both SMAPI and all of your mods are fully updated, you might want to post a screenshot of your SMAPI log -- the cause of the crash may very well be written in there.
Finally, if you’re still having problems after all of that, you may want to post your pc specs.
To determine your machine’s specs, you can either use your search engine to search for ‘what are my specs’ or something along those lines, or you can let Steam determine them for you. To do that, select ‘Help’ from the top left of the Steam window. From the drop-down, choose ‘System Information’. Then just copy and paste the information Steam provides about your system here.
Good luck.
Edit: for clarity
Thank you so much for the advice, I did some of the things you suggested and it ended up loading into one of my save files! Only problem is it took a while to load and is doing the same 'not responding' thing and promptly crashed after I tried to leave the house. When I have time I will post the Smapi log on here and hopefully get down to the problem.
