Stardew is not recognizing Nintendo controller

Hey y'all, I've been playing PC stardew with a wired Nintendo switch controller for years and I've never had any issues with the button mapping. Suddenly this week the game is trying to use Xbox controller mapping. Stardew is the only game this is happening to.

The steam controller settings say the controller is being recognized as an Xbox 360 controller, but navigating steam in big picture mode is using the Nintendo mapping regardless. Use Nintendo button layout is turned off and enable steam input for Xbox controllers is turned on. I can press the Nintendo A button to launch stardew, but as soon as I'm *in* stardew it thinks the Nintendo A button is the B button and I cannot figure out how to reverse this. Do I need to set every button by hand in-game? When I've tried to do that it says "this button is already mapped" or something similar and I'm growing very frustrated.
