but if you don't launch smapi through steam, you'll only get in game achievements.
Not true. You just need to make sure you have Steam open while using SMAPI
That depends on the mod.
Some need a new save, others don't.
Read the mod description carefully
https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Installing_SMAPI_on_Windows
It's under 'configure your game client'.
In SMAPI, after you get it going, it prints a log when it starts. It lists a bunch of different categories of mods, and one of those categories explicitly says:
Those are the ones you absolutely cannot remove. The others should generally be fine to add/remove as you go. If you add or remove anything with a map, bushes and things will be messed up, but it's unlikely to bork your save.
Anything that's under Content Patcher or Alternative Textures can go in and out without issue from the mods themselves, provided you remove items they add from your farm before removing the mod (like if you have a modded chest with a bunch of stuff in it, get your stuff before you remove the mod). If you use a modded greenhouse, plant plants, and then remove it, it will *work*, but your plants will be in the wrong space and may or may not be reachable with your toon. That sort of stuff.
It's the changing the save serializer stuff that actively borks saves, though.
This is no longer true but is still best practices. I've gotten new achievements on steam while only having steam and smapi running and open at the same time. No need to be lunched through Steam.
That has not been my experience, but I'm glad to hear that it's been changed.
really? i thought seam wasn't spyware like that. shame
I assume it's more that the game needs to be able to communicate with Steam to tell them you got the achievement, and so their both needing to be open. So maybe something in game got changed to allow it. I did the launch through Steam in the past but with the new update, it wasn't working on my new computer with fresh installation. Steam kept saying the file wasn't there, even though it clearly was.
While looking for a solution, I found someone saying it works long as you have Steam open and so I gave it a shot and I've been getting the new achievements that way just fine.
