So... ducks aren't profitable?
^^
Looks like it wasn't best decision to sell top hearts chickens :(

Yeah, sadly, for some weird reason, all the specialty animals are more expensive to buy, give their produce less often, and the produce in general is worth less than the basic animals' produce.

It has never made sense, and it continues to make no sense to this day. It takes more effort to unlock these animals, and you get less out of them.

The duck eggs/duck mayo needs to be at least 2x the value of the chickens' for it to be balanced, and that's only breaking even.

Best bet is to get 1 duck until it gives you a feather and then sell it once you max its hearts and get a void chicken instead once you unlock the sewer.

And don't listen to those youtubers who tell you to get multiple rabbits, lol. Rabbits do not give better stuff than chickens. A rabbit gives you a paw, maybe once a season if you're lucky. You'll get wool about once a week. Otherwise, you get nothing.

I usually run a lizard, one rabbit, one duck and the rest a mix of regular and void chickens in my deluxe coop. And if I really wanted to min-max, it'd be all void chickens except maybe 1 for eggs for cooking.

You do still need them to get feathers if you're going the Community Center route.

You get more profit from chickens IF you're willing to pick up/process their eggs every day. The benefit of ducks or dinosaurs is that you can ignore them for longer, since ducks only produce eggs every two days, and dinosaurs weekly. So you're gaining the benefit of less work/time.

Yeah, mostly what Snowy said.

Point being:
Chickens are 100% money, 100% labor.
Ducks are 75% money, but only 50% labor.

(After they're matured and at max hearts of course).
dont count only the eggs, the duck feathers are random, yes, but they make money too.
I have one big coop, and in it I have 1 brown chicken, 1 white chicken, 1 duck, and 5 void chickens.

The brown and white chickens and the duck were to get large eggs and a duck egg for the Animal products bundle to get the greenhouse. ( I was lucky and was able to buy wool and large goat milk from the Traveling Cart.)

The void chickens are for the money.

I am hoping to find a rabbit's foot at the cart for the other bundle so I don't have to build a Deluxe Coop, because other than wool and a rabbit's foot for bundles, rabbits suck.

If I do have to build a Deluxe Coop, I'll put one rabbit in it and fill the rest of the slots with void chickens, then I will sell the damn rabbit once it drops the bunny foot.
You only want ducks and chickens to get the necessary items for achievements, etc. For me I had about 150 rabbits for the rabbit feet which are universal loves for everyone except penny iirc

Most NPCs have Loved gifts that are plentiful and easy to get.

Haley loves Coconuts (which is nice if you get the Foraging 10 perk, because Iridium-star gifts give way more points)

George loves Leeks (you can easily get enough leeks to last a year if you look around a little, esp with the double forage perk).

Everybody who shows up at the bar except for "the kids" (Abigail, Sam, and Sebastian) either likes, or loves beer which makes that easy, just buy beers for everybody there, which covers half of the village almost.

Emily loves cloth, if you have 1 sheep on your farm, that's easily enough cloth to give emily her cloth twice a week and still have some to sell).

Harvey loves Truffle Oil, can easily get enough for a year out of a single pig for one season, easy.

Rabbits' feet are probably the WORST gifts to give, because of the opportunity cost of selling mayo, and all the work that goes into getting a farm that can produce enough of them.

It's always better to try to get easy to find but yet well liked gifts to get the villagers' friendship up as quick and cheap as possible, prioritizing foraging and fishing items due to how easy it is to get Iridium-star out of them.

Random claim checking time, cuz pointless mathz time!

A) Chicken costs 800g or an egg (see below)
B) Egg or Egg(Rancher)-> To Mayo or Mayo(Artisan)
Egg: 50/62/75/100 or 60/74/90/120 -> 190 or 266
LEgg: 95/118/142/190 or 114/142/170/228 -> 285 or 390
At max friendship, gain at least an egg every day. At max friendship/mood, get an LEgg every day instead. This is easily fully controllable, so we can use LEgg as the only product type.
C) Incubator time: (9000m)5d:16h:40m or (4500m)2d:21h:40m (coop master)
D) Minimum time to mature: 4 days (hatch/buy day +3)
E) Minimum time to max friendship: 44 or 29 (coop master) days (+23 or +35 points per day)
F) Sale price: 240 to 1040 depending on friendship
G) Maximum sale price if selling the previous chicken when new incubation hatches: 332
H) Selling chickens asap via incubation (G) earns maximum of 53.12 per day, per coop.
I) Buying chickens (800) and selling after max friendship (1040) earns 5.52 to 8.4(coop master) per day, per chicken.

Now same for ducks, with all values being the same unless noted below:
A) Duck costs 1200g or an egg
B)
Egg: 95/118/142/190 or 114/141/170/228 -> 375 or 450 (Rancher) or 525 (Artisan)
Feather: 250/312/375/500 or 300/374/450/600 (Rancher)
At max friendship/mood, get an Egg every 2 days and a feather every 3 days. After accounting for this, the average per day is
Egg: 47.5/59/71/95 or 57/70.5/85/114 -> 187.5 or 225 (Rancher) or 262.5 (Artisan)
Feather: 83.33/104/129/166.67 or 100/124.67/150/200
Total (Egg+Feather): 130.83/163/200/261.67 or 157/195.17/235/314
Total (Mayo+Feather): 270.83/...387.5 or 382/.../539 (Rancher) or 419.5/.../576.5 (Artisan)
C)
D)
E)
F) 360 to 1560
G) 470.4
H) maximum 75.264 per day per coop
I) buying (1200) and selling at max (1560) gains 8.18 or 12.41 (coop master) per day

Compare:
Duck Incubator spam (H) gains 22.144 more per day than chickens.
Buying and selling ducks (I) gains 2.66 to 4.01 per day more than chickens.
Duck raw products sell for a minimum of 35.83 more per day than chickens, up to 142.5 more per day depending on profession and quality.
Duck processed (mayo+feather) products sell for a minimum of 14.17 less and a maximum of 186.5 more depending on profession and quality.
If you really want, you can do the math to get average quality rates, but this should already be more than enough to tell you that duck > chicken. It doesn't need a buff. It just takes a bit more time to ramp up because early processing for eggs is easy and you will almost certainly have it long before obtaining Artisan, or even before you have a chicken/duck (aside from the new map I guess).

Maybe there is something with cooking that could tip the scale (doubt), but I can't stand that system so the the numbers there mean nothing to me. :|
Also, idk if anything in 1.6 patch changed any of these values.

omg ducks really are worth more
meh, i dont care about profit, i just think its fun to have and build a duck enclosure, with a pond for them to swim in.

though, i personally, would have liked to see pet bowls with a watering and food bowl, i want to feed them, not just give them water.

sadly i dont think i have seen a mod that does this and concerned ape hasnt added this, though imo, its a great idea that im sure many would like.

So feathers can beat mayo quality, interesting.
Basically closer to Artisan you are - better to invest in ducks.

e: now do dinosaurs and void chickens ;p
e2: even if it will be same or almost same ducks wins because of less time consumption.
