As for why? Because they're the only days in spring, that have 3 days in a row without a birthday, without another festival right before and after it and without blocking the first day of the month.
It's not easy to get access to the bus and festival in the first year, but it is possible.
Are you referring to Jas or the desert festival vendor?
Salmonberries in the long run are useless. You sound like you're very new to the game. If so you should disregard the festival for year 1.
Your wording suggests that the desert festival is the thing that gets you early access to SC. Am I reading this right? You're saying the desert festival gets you early SC?
Picking up salmonberries to sell is not a great use of time. But I like picking up hundreds of salmonberries so I can have a convenient supply of healing items in a single item stack. If I can pick up 400-500 iridium quality salmonberries in a season, then I have a basically inexhaustible supply of healing for the rest of the year.
By the time I get to year 2, my farm is pretty self-sufficient. I'm well on my way to being able to afford the obelisks, and I already have all of the ores I'll ever need. I'm really just waiting for red cabbage seeds to be available (bad luck with buying then from the travelling merchant this time). So I have time to spare most days. i really just want a big stack of salmonberries.
You can go in skull caverns as part of the festival.
Ah I see it unlocks the door itself... interesting. I wouldn't have guessed that. On my save I made it to the festival with the key, but I see now in the wiki it specifies this.
Although, it's not like it matters much for me as I always reach floor 120 before the end of Year 1 anyway.
