I thought the update was bringing steam workshop support. Was i completely wrong or did it get cancelled?

not much specific was announced, just that there would be modding improvements.

workshop was just a natural thing to assume and hope for as an outsider.

the updates never mentioned anything about steam workshop, it was about making the game itself easier to mod.

Concerned Ape mentioned he would only do a workshop if the majority of the modders wanted and they do not. They prefer using the Nexus so it was not and won't be implemented.

I dont get why someone would prefer nexus over steam workshops.
Steam workshops is the most convenient way of modding a game and you could still use nexus for stuff that isnt allowed or functional via workshop.

Imo workshop support would be so f awesome for this game. You just click on subscribe for a new farm map or other content and it will remember it even if you install the game again after a longer time etc.

Perfect game for steam workshop support, just like e.g. rimworld.

Most of the Modders don't like the Steam Workshop for a Variety of reasons. Therefore CA hasn't added it.
ChrillBill Apr 23, 2024 @ 2:11pm
It was for the mod authors - making their job both easier and also granting them more freedom when it comes to modding. It was pretty clear because if a steam workshop was coming surely he would have mentioned that specifically.

True. This is something many often seems to forget. They think mods are magically appearing in Steam Workshops. But if mod authors has no interest of publish their work then all those workshops will end up providing is dust :brownchicken:

Hmn, as Im not in the position to know about the specifics I just thought its more or less the same if they publish a mod on nexus or via workshop. But I guess there is more to it.
But even than it wouldnt force mod creators to publish via workshop and nothing would change while some creators maybe would use it.

I think more options, at least on this topic, are always a win. :)
ChrillBill Apr 23, 2024 @ 2:25pm
Oh having options are good. There is quite a lot of work behind a workshop though, it's not something that is done over night. If there is little to no interest among mod authors for a steam workshop, it's just not worth the time and effort. They do come first here, since they are the ones providing the actual mods that players download.

So even if some doesn't agree with that, I for one can understand that sort of reasoning.

A Workshop would be easier for the players, but would be worse for the mod creators.

Many of them have revenue streams associated with their work (which is something that the various 3rd party mod sites frequently support, but which a Workshop would not). There are also issues surrounding copying other people's work and claiming it's one's own.

The point is: The existing situation is better for the Mod Creators. And if the situation is better for the mod creators, then they keep making mods for SDV. And that's ultimately better for you.

Not for me especially, because usually with nexus mods Im ending up with more time modding the game and finally doesnt even play it. Whereas with workshop I usually cherry pick stuff that just add some minor things and it "just works"... but thats 100% a "me" issue and i totally understand what you wrote and agree that in the end its the mod creators that should benefit from their work.

Thanks for explaining. :FFVheart:

question: how can people who bought this game on other shops, such as gog or humble download mods available for steam workshop? because those players paid for the game and deserve modding access as much as we do.

as for alternatives to nexus, there's moddrop. or the devs can make their mods open source and allow release downloads straight from the git repo along with the nexus. having a 2nd place to download a mod from is good when one site fails...

Nexus is a godsent site. I use Nexus since 2012 (Skyrim, hi!), for every game imaginable. I never had any problems and I find the interface and the website very easy to use
It is a breeze to download mods and even easier to update them

Also, Stardew Valley has the 5th biggest community on Nexus, so I think it's going very well (16k files, 350m downloads)

Easier to modders, easier to us. Look at what Bethesda did with mods and realize that out-of-Steam mods are WAY better (easier, cheaper, functional)

Steam workshop has some serious design problems. It will force update a mod if you want it to or not. If the author deletes a mod, steam workshop will delete it from your computer. Those are among the worse.

there are thousands of mods for this game on NEXUS, and moving them to workshop would be an impossible task,
I like NEXUS because it keeps track of all the mods I have downloaded in the past, lets you track new mods ,and notifies you of updates for your mods, gives full descriptions and details and picture for the mods, as well as posts and discussions about the mods. You can post a question or problems and you get a response from the others and the mod creator, as well as a notification about the response.
From what I have seen on workshop, very few of those features are available, and the games that I have seen mods for on workshop have very few mods in comparison to SDV on Nexus.

Even with over 100 mods installed from NEXUS, I can go on and immediately see a list of all the mods that updated while I slept. As well I can see which new mods have become popular really quickly.

I think its pretty pointless to argue "Steam workshops" VS "Nexus", as they both have pros and cons. I never said anything bad about nexus and using it for complex mods and games not on steam.

My whole point was an additional workshop implementation. Nexus would still be there for everyone on every system and some modders may put their stuff on workshop.

There is no need to raise a flag for one or the other in general. Adding more possibilities isnt magically deleting your prefered choice of mod source.
