Sorry, I edited my post
It's early Autumn, year 1, on my fresh save.
I was cleaning up the farm and drying peppers mostly. Only did rare occasional runs in Mine just to grab enough ore for next upgrade. I didn't even got all scrolls yet.
Then I started over for whatever reason and it was the first book I found again, also early about a dozen-ish floors into the mine?
People should try to control for other variables rather than just say "oh yeah it's rare". Well if your combat is at level 4, and then eventually you hit level 7, the book will *seem* rare.
I'm talking about the monster compendium as a drop from monsters. The test to what I said doesn't have to do with boxes, it would be to get the drop at low combat level.
I got mine at combat 5-6, the day I achieved that level. And again with fishing I noticed it 3 times on 3 new runs. They appear in chests after you pass a certain level (I presume 5 or 6)
