Most likely this was done to prevent the regular chest from becoming obsolete in the early game. Besides, the Big Chests are way more useful mid-late game as you start getting a lot more different kinds of items.

5k is not that bad. i got that in the first 2 weeks by fishing up a Treasure Chest ;p

I found out by accident that I could swap it for my regular chests without unloading by having it selected on the hot bar and clicking on the chest you want to swap out.

That is super useful. I did not know that!
Just tried it with my regular chests on the farm and this actually worked! My regular chests evolved into big chests.

5000 is couch change outside of your few seasons--why do you need a 70 slot chest that early on?

It's a luxury item.

Early-game, you can always build a couple smaller chests, which you should do anyhow to sort items. It makes them way easier to find.

Later-game when you start running out of room, 5k is not that big of an investment when you're pulling in 10k a day passively.
