I discovered that players need the same build of the game to be able to join multiplayer now, but our games do have the same build and we still werent able to join. I'd really appreciate if anyone had any idea how to fix this.
The most glaring error is the OP saying that there's not enough cabins available. That means that you made a single player map, or a multiplayer map with only one player at the start. You need ONE CABIN ALREADY BUILT ON THE MAP PER PLAYER. In other words, if there's just your normal house, no one can join you until that's fixed (or until you make a new map and add more cabins in the starting menu).
If your game was modded, SMAPI and such can add files that will mess up or bug out multiplayer as well (even with a fresh install). You'll have to clean them out manually, and it's difficult to point to where that is without knowing what your mod setup was.
Finally the game absolutely needs to be the same build, and it's possible that moving builds mid save could have caused some issues (especially in multiplayer as well). I know ConcernedApe has been trying to be good about making a clean upgrade forward, but it's possible this could be the issue as well.
