I always just get clay from the ginger island dig site.
Clay it´s indeed the big stopper in progression, it´s becoming more and more noticable. Every other basic resource has one or two methods to be farmed extensivelly, even the new one Moss if you have 20 trees in your farm, even tapped ones, you can easily get 3-5 moss everyday without leaving the farm. But clay... meeeeen, how come there´s still no trade to make to get it? or a machine that produce it if you put, i don´t know, 5 stone? 5 stone and 1 coal? whatever. At certain threashold, you literally can stop farming all resources and just buy them or trade for them.... EXCEPT CLAY.

Anyhow, there´s supposedly an exploit to farm it, it involves some pattern in a big diggable area, generally the beach, not sure if the exploit still exist since those videos are probably 2 updates old or even more, I never tried, seems annoying. But for me the only solution is visiting Ginger Island dig site every 2 days. It´s a bit of work, specially before building the warp towers, but I found it to be the most reliable and less annoying that going into the mines to dig dirt. THe only issue with the Ginger island thing is that the dig site generally holds waaaaay more bone nodes than clay ones, and after completing the archeology tent and Gunther´s bone boardquest they are kind of a useless item you get 200 per day, although you can build several bone mills and use them to get free fertilizers, at least some deluxe speed and the one for trees I find it nice to have a few from time to time. And before all of that, I use to rely on artifact spots on the beach, the farm and the mountain, those generally give you 1-3 clay (depending on skills) besides the usual worthless artifacts of those areas.

why is clay a barrier to any sort of progression? what are we doing en masse with clay? garden pots? quality retaining soil?

you got the whole greenhouse and ginger island farm, thats enough for any progression.

Yes and no, DELUXE retaining soil. And also brick floors, fiber seeds, dehydrators and I need more Bone Mills because my travels to Ginger Island to get clay are providing me with even more bones that have no other use lol

The deluxe retaining soil specially, I´m not good at keeping track of timers for production and my game had a serious lack of Iridum and was tired of going to buy one from Korbus every friday, so I ended up using it for the whole Ginger Island farm area and some crops got cannibalized by wild weed because I was distracted and not going much there, so I had to redoo the deluxe retaining soil. Plus I have a shed with 136 garden pots, 24 dehydrators, and 8 garden pots in my house with coffe beans and tea saplings, and these last ones I have moved and replanted them and change them to flowers tons of time, so that generally implied more deluxe retaining soil. Currently it´s the fiber seeds eating my clay, cause I use tons of it, plus i need to farm 999 for the farming mastery statue.

So yeah, I´m a clay chugger XDXDXD And it´s the only basic resource I personally haven´t found a way to get it daily on the three digits mark, while the rest you can very easily.

Tbh clay was already bafflingly scarce before this update as it was, and yeah, now with the new random tiling algorithm and fewer artifact spots it's getting to absurd levels. Like I said in another thread, in year 1 it's a progress-stopper, then by year 2 I'm getting more iridium (25+) any day I care to try than clay.

If you dig in the ground in front of Robin's house I usually get some there, more then what I found on the beach.
Cheat: I use the hoe on the tractor to till soil but by Robin's house , next to Willie's and at the beach, you get all the clay you need in only a few minutes.
Tractor : Hoe, pickaxe, hoe, pickaxe, hoe. Lots of clay
