IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES/CRASHES, TRY THESE FIXES.
here is a list of things to try.

removed the devs/mods solution link, there are quite a few outdated fixes cause stuff changed since then, including the links it gives for other solutions.

maybe a moderator can update that pinned thread and remove/update the outdated solutions and the outdated solutions mentioned in the links at the bottom of that pinned thread?

cause it seems to be causing issues, like people installing xna, or ms runtime redist 2015 (which isnt a thing anymore as it merged with newer versions), or dotnet 5 with people installing sdk instead of desktop runtime 5 cause its not specified, or other various solutions.

) uninstalling/reinstalling, while backing up your save files and/or mods first.

) verifying game files.

) desktop runtime 6 is needed for the game, 5 isnt used anymore? and xna is removed.

) antivirus blocking files or the exe, meaning you need to whitelist the game.

) removing one drive, as it causes all type of issues in loads of games.

) removing all mods, or one by one to resolve mod conflicts and bugs, then getting rid of the culprit.

) making sure all mods are updated, along with smapi.

) if none of those work, then simply run smapi alone without mods (and using the launch command) to display any errors, cause it may display an error outside of the game (example being an outdated gpu/ect.. driver), it also in one example solved an issue with the game not closing (which sounds like a bug in the game itself), as well as mods bugs and conflicts, ect..

.

side note: if you are running a laptop with integrated gpu (igpu) then you need to make sure the game isnt using it and using (assuming you have one) the dedicated gpu by setting your gpu performance to "maximum performance".

side note: when placing mods in the mod folder for the game, you have to unzip them and place the new folder into the mods folder, or it wont load them and they wont show up, or work.

side note: running smapi seems to find and solve many issues or at the least points you in a direction to look.

side note: if you are removing mods and smapi, you need to remove the launch command from steam, so it launches the games exe, instead of trying to launch smapi.

side note: if you are wanting to run mods only updated to ver 1.5 of stardew valley, then you need to opt into the beta and choose the 1.5.6 version, to continue on with said mods.

side note: for using mods or heavily using mods, mod managers (one example is vortex, which off hand i dont know if it only works with nexusmods) can simplify getting and using mods for this game and all the others able to be modded, it can update all or one at a time, disable and remove them as well and can place them in load orders, along with many other useful features.

.

good luck and let me know if any helped, or if help is needed.

I hear that if you hit the capslock key, that works pretty good, too!

updated the thread and removed link to dev/mods pinned solution thread, it has several outdated solutions (including solutions in the link in the bottom of that pinned thread) and im not willing to write them all down in my list explaining the issues.

added another update to the thread, i seemed to have missed that stardew valley moved from desktop runtime 5 to desktop runtime 6, according to the wiki?

edit: i see no mention of desktop runtime 6 in any 1.6 update news threads on steam (as far as i can see), yet the wiki says it was moved to desktop runtime 6.... could this be a reason some people arent getting their games running with any fixes at all?

https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Version_History#1.6

read or ctrl f .net 6 and you find nothing about it in the link above.

https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Migrate_to_Stardew_Valley_1.6

For C# mod authors, Stardew Valley 1.6 updates from .NET 5 to .NET 6

take note again, that .net 6 isnt mentioned anywhere but the modding/migration page on the wiki.

.......................................................................................................................................

also to note, there is a beta branch, it has...

https://www.stardewvalley.net/compatibility/

xna - 32bit, for vista and lower (which isnt supported by steam and none of them run on steam).

the xna version can run on 64bit OS/cpu's.

it isnt compatible with smapi or any mods, because of it being 32bit.

but it "might" use less resources than the 64bit versions (havent bothered testing to see).

and

1.5.6 - 64bit, which i assume (its not mentioned at all) is for windows "something" up to win 11 and is for people who want to play with mods, until 1.6 version isnt being constantly updated anymore and mods can be used freely.

keeping in mind steam only supports win 10 and up (for now).

while also keeping in mind that when microsoft (oct 2025) and steam (some time after) drops support for win 10, there will be no OS's supporting 32bit (win 10 was the last OS to have a 32bit installer) and as well steam doesnt support anything lower than win 10, vista/xp barely run on steam (you need some tech skills/coding to even get them working on steam and they still dont run properly) and win 7 runs (for now, until it doesnt).

both beta version are stated to have the same content as standard version w/e that means (1.6.2? or 1.5.6?).

In terms of game content, this version is exactly the same as the standard version, and will receive any new content updates alongside the standard version. You can also play multiplayer with people using the standard version. The only issue you might run into is if you are playing with mods. Mods targeting the standard version may not work with the compatibility version (xna version), and vice-versa.

one being xna and the other 1.5.6, so i have no clue what "content" they have or dont have.

or is the xna version info stating it has the same content as the 1.5.6 version (being called the standard version on the wiki, while also being called the main branch in other info on the wiki?), thus no new content in either from 1.6.2? or?

compatibility branch (beta branch)

There's two versions of Stardew Valley.

1.5.6 the newer 64-bit, main branch which is installed by default last version before 1.6 and is for modded play while 1.6 is finishing its constant updates.

and

a legacy 32-bit (xna version) compatibility branch for "older systems".

These have identical content for players, but use different frameworks (xna vs monogame)

ill also add, someone using the xna version mentioned it had (so far) some of the new content from 1.6, yet isnt meant to? or is? as the info doesnt match up to whats been mention by someone using xna?

either of the beta versions have to be selected to install, 1.5.6 does not install by default.... not sure why it says that (outdated info? wrong info?) and the "main branch" mention i would assume would be 1.6.2, not 1.5.6 :lunar2020thinkingtiger:

noting this as well.

SMAPI installer opens, then immediately closes

Q: The installer opens for a second, then immediately closes.

A: Make sure you’re installing SMAPI 3.13.1 or later, which fixed an issue with path names. If you are, try whitelisting the SMAPI installer with your antivirus, and redownload, as your SMAPI installer may have been mangled by your antivirus. If that still doesn’t work try these steps:

Open the installer folder.

Hold shift and right-click on the folder background.

Click the option that says Open in command prompt / PowerShell / Windows Terminal (depending on your Windows settings).

Run "install on Windows.bat" (if Command Prompt) or ./"install on Windows.bat" (if PowerShell or Windows Terminal).

Now if it crashes, the window should stay open so you can see the error.

last fix in "other issues" but right above "known issues".

this should supposedly allow you to see w/e error its having, which will aid in fixing the issue(s).

.

the link below has a list of fixes as well, one could check, though i dont know what works or not and what has been updated info wise.
