Cannot get hay from cutting grass

Hi all, I just started a new game with no mods on a regular farm. I built a coop but I can't get any hay from cutting grass for my chickens. It's been a long time since I last played this, so I can't remember if I need to build a silo first. After I built the coop I didn't get another quest to build a silo or purchase animals, so I just went ahead and bought the chickens.

Do I need the silo first, or is this a bug?

Yes you need the Silo. Actually for the future keep in mind its always more useful to build the silo first. Its pretty cheap anyways and you can start collecting hay until you build your coop.

Harvesting hay requires an empty (or at least not filled) silo to gather, yes.

with out a silo the only way to get hay is sometime you get it when harvesting wheat.

also little trick not to forget.
once your silo starts to fill up, extract all the hay from the bin inside the coop (hold r click) and put it in a chest, this only works if theres a empty space in the feeding trough. that way you'll never waste any grass if reaching the silo cap

if you have autofeeder you'll need to drop a bomb on the feeding trough to empty them

if you manage your farm/grass well enough you can have enough grass to last like 1-2 years before winter even hits
