Everything's fine with 1.6 content in the old save, except for mystery boxes.. I've also tried to kill ton of monsters in the mines but no luck. Now i'll try with iridium pan and i'll wait for the first new festival where you can actually obtain a mystery box..
Which is, in your opinion, the method with higher chances to obtain boxes? So i can focus on that.
I seem to get the most from fishing, though that's probably just because I do it so much. I imagine if you focused on running the mines you'd probably get just as many from monsters and crates.
Also, make sure you participate in the trout and squid derbies. They have them as rewards.
Get the red bopper from Wally's shop that helps with finding treasures when fishing. It can show a normal type of treasure or a golden icon. If the icon is golden, the treasure you're hauling in will include a golden mystery box.
Think they're also more common in the Skull cavern than in the regular mines.
