It's got to be deployed inside a barn or coop.

and you will need one for each of your barns or coops, They work to pet your animals daily, but it still takes time to make them love you. Since the auto-petter works daily, once they are at full hearts, they will stay that way, and you will get better quality products from the animals.

It simply automatically pets any animal in a coop/barn every day. The mood will be raised at the same rate as if you're doing it manually (and you can pet them yourself for twice the effect), friendship however will grow half as fast, so it takes longer to get them to max level, but on the other side, the auto-petter will prevent friendship decay, so you don't need to take care of them everyday anymore, especially when you combine it with an auto-grabber and the auto-feeding system.

FYI, it doesn't actually keep them at full hearts. I spent a whole month ignoring my animals and they all lost a full heart even with a petter. So you do still need to give them some amount of love every so often.

I had an auto petter and auto milker and I'm pretty sure my pets hearts went up, but I leave the barn door open.

I have the animal husbandry mod, and with that you can give regular treats to the animals that they like, which makes them grow faster, like you more, and give better quality loot too.

The only ways to loose friendship with animals is to not feed them, having them trapped outside or not petting them. So if you've an auto-petter, then it's definitely one of the other 2 that makes them loose friendship.

They were fully upgraded with auto-feeders, but it's possible I forgot to keep the silo full, so might've been that I guess. I was at the end of a play-through and wasn't doing my usual routines :)
