I wish we could save in the menu

I have adhd and I struggle to commit to games that have dedicated areas to save, that saving is a commitment in SV (because it advances the day) means wringing time out of each day by doing as much as you can which can take 20-ish minutes. This causes me anxiety and lately when I think of playing again I feel burned out before starting up the game because of the energy investment each run will take me. I end up playing a mobile game that I can shut off after 5 minutes instead.

I also have power outages sometimes and I wish I could save every time I get good RNG so I won't lose that progress if my power goes out.

I at least wish we had some ability to enable an autosave that worked whenever we closed the game so the people scumming for RNG could just do the normal method but people like me would have a quicksave feature like pokemon ranger had for example.

CA never gave a good reason for omitting a QoL thing that Friends of Mineral Town had (and SV is so close to that game already) besides it "doesn't fit his vision for the game" but honestly the accessibility utility of a convenient save feature massively outweighs that so it's my #1 requested feature.

it'd make starting new runs in a game I otherwise like feel much less like a massive investment on my energy.

also basically every video game today has to compete with mobile games letting you stop whenever, and which also boot up super fast so their energy investment is very low. SV is pretty old now but its poorly thought out saving system was archaic by the standards of the games it took inspiration from so if the reason it doesn't have that feature is because of the technical work involved then man that just sounds like something went wrong in the planning.

The save system was a conscious design decision, so no, it wasn't planned badly. You can obviously disagree with the devs over it if it doesn't fit your playstyle, but you shouldn't attack the dev personally over it.

Yeah, gonna concur with Maya-Neko on this one.

The existing save system is a design choice. It may not interact ideally with your personal issues, but as Ryika said, it's a system that allows you to redo major problems while also encouraging you to let minor foibles and errors go.

Learning to let go is one of the key lessons of the save system. A day takes 10-20 minutes of real time to play, it's not long enough to worry about.

If you reach a point where you can't keep playing, just let it go. Close the game and walk away for a while. I do that sometimes. I'll get halfway through a day and decide I'm just not in the right head-space to keep going and I'll quit. I probably don't do it as often as you might need to, but I do do it fairly often.

Also, Grandpa's Goals are the big one I'm worried about because you can never redo it. It's necessary to complete the community center in 2 years which means every day has to at least attempt certain things.

The reward's not that great but it's the principle of the thing, the save feels incomplete if it's less than perfect.

As NBOX21 said, you can just use a Diamond to request a new Evaluation. You're never locked out of completing it.
yes on my first pay thru I did not pass Grandpa's evaluation the first time, but i was able to get him to come back and check again so I got it eventually. I played vanilla then and it took me 10 years in game, playing very relaxed, to reach completion and get up to the peak.
you can play this game however you like, fast or slow, with or without mods. Rich or poor. In fact a while back I played a Rich farm challenge while another player was playing a Poor farm challenge, We both posted story updates, progress, and pictures in a post here for everyone to follow. The last farm I played thru I challenged my self to marry everyone in one year. I ended up with a large farm and house and 23 spouses and 21 children. So just have fun and play however you want.

There's a lot of time-sensitive things. If you miss grinding for a festival, that's not a simple reset, so you do need to plan ahead.
This is just something that you kind of get a better feel for on repeat plays much like a lot of other things in this game, not to mention all festivities repeat on the same day every year so it is something you can learn and adapt to over time. Even I couldn't plan in advance the first time around.

Starting Year 3, if you don't have all four candles lit, you can bring a diamond and place it inside the shrine in order to get your farm re-evaluated the next morning. The only time where you're permanently locked out of having your farm re-assessed ever again is when all four candles are lit and the reward is claimed.

I've played since 2016 on 12 different saves in both singleplayer and multiplayer. I know how video games work, thanks.

Maybe don't assume the tired adult with ♥♥♥♥ going on in their life is just a newcomer smol bean who needs gentle advice.

You can always just do them next year. Which is a bit of an annoyance if you just about miss, I'll give you that, but what I'm saying is that there's nothing you can miss because you didn't progress quickly enough. There's always a next year - if you feel stressed by having to worry about maximizing your time, just... don't do it, and take a more relaxed approach to the game.

You can request grandpa to reevaluate your farm at any time. That's what I mentioned earlier - this hasn't been a one-time thing since relatively shortly after release.

I personally preferred having control over when my game saved in the older Harvest Moon games. Being able to stop when I needed to meant I was always playing fresh, so I always played my best. I also liked being able to go multiple days without saving in case some crazy experiment I was doing didn't pan out but in fairness, you kinda had to do that one in older HM games because they were a lot more cryptic than SV is.
And that's fair, I think that opinion is a perfectly valid one to have.

But calling it an "accessibility" feature is rather misleading in my opinion. The save system is not what's stopping you from enjoying the game, it's that you don't give yourself room to just relax and enjoy the game. That's not even a disability thing I think, threads where people who just tryhard too much vent their frustration seem to come in many forms.

Sure, the Quicksave feature would allow you to avoid the problem, but you could also avoid it just by getting your mindset better aligned with what you're able to do. To me it sounds a bit like you're using your disability to push for a change that's just... convenient for you. It does not seem to be something you really "need" in the same way that actual accessibility features allow people to play a game that they otherwise couldn't.

Linking the mod I used that I've confirmed working.

https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/8386?tab=description

If anyone needs help installing mods, this was the video I used:
https://youtu.be/CkKq1a1g9jg?si=G0dNXNnBifsQFIYf

It has an issue where it resets your day, but seems like it preserves your inventory. It works well enough as an emergency option if I require it. The lack of official support is still an accessibility problem especially as the mod lacks proper stability.

Saving grace is there is there's a number of QoL mods that can circumvent some of the annoying RNG and make every save optimal to play without as much effort as vanilla requires but that's a bit outside the scope of the thread.

The topic has otherwise run its course and apparently nothing of value can be gained from it further.

Edit: I was going to mark this as my answer but apparently this board doesn't support that function.
