Hm, I don't use Vortex, but normally with mod-managers + mod-loader combos you need to instruct the mod-manager(Vortex) to start the game via the mod-loader(SMAPI). Vortex is prolly using the vanilla Stardew Valley.exe file to boot the game.

I hope this video still works with the newest version of Vortex. Trying it out can't hurt, tho.

Hm. if you are worried that your have to reinstall all mods again then that's not a problem, because SMAPI is a mod-injector. Vanilla game files are left untouched.

Yes, but a lot of mods will break in 1.6 due to all the changes CA is making to how modding works. A few of the more popular mods will apparently be getting early access to update before release, but most will have to update post-patch.

This is actually partially false. Anyone can actually access the modding alpha right now with permission through the official Discord. It's just the technical side of 1.6 that's accessed publicly so mod authors can update their mods before 1.6 goes live. The actual content side of 1.6 is hidden and only CA and a small amount of people have access to the new content.

Basically what I'm saying is, the only mods that will break are the ones that didn't update their mods before 1.6. Which there was a lot of time to get them updated. The alpha has been available to mod authors since 2022. And the final call to update mods for 1.6 was just a couple months ago.

There is plenty of mods (mine included) that are already ready for the 1.6 release and many mod authors are hard at work to get theirs ready as well :)

Yes, if people want to install mods then they can just go for it. If they are scared that some of their mods aren't updated on time then they should disable auto-updates for SDV on steam and just start the game via SMAPI.

This is really interesting, I have been awaiting the 1.6 update for a what seems like forever now, really thought it would land before the end of the year, now wondering if we will see it for the games anniversary in Feb? You seem to have a good handle on this, do you know how close to complete it is?

Really looking forward to the new stuff but also hoping the changes for mods will bring bigger and better mods and hopefully make them easier to add and maintain too. Hopefully will give the modding scene a welcome boost, with so many modders holding back content for 1.6...

CA is still adding new content (which we don't have access to) as can be seen by his tweets or reddit or w/e it is he posts on. We have no access to new content, but the code refactor is in alpha version and seems to be more or less completely done. There is no knowing how close we are to 1.6 however, unless CA lets it slip.

Yup. No release date. Follow CA on twitter. I haven't joined SDV discord, but I'm sure announcements for new post will be posted there too.

Then we have this:

I will say, 1.6's modding update will certainly make modding a lot easier. The mods I currently work on, Fishing Made Easy Suite, Farming Made Easy Suite, and Combat Made Easy Suite all have brand new features that wasn't possible pre 1.6. I've been working hard on adding new additions and features to them since early August.

As for your first question, they were trying to get 1.6 out before Christmas, but there's a lot that still needed to be tweaked and worked on. Some awesome new additions for modders has been added very recently that will bring about some interesting new mods I bet haha. But right now, the official notice states: "We're in the final stages of development and testing though, so the unofficial estimate is "as soon as it's ready" 2024."

I have a good feeling we won't be waiting too much longer!

Like "allowing to stick some xml/json with data to some folder to adjust few in-game constants, or add new equipment variants, no need to compile stuff" easier or what?
Queen Droxxanna Jan 19, 2024 @ 10:37am
I had over 300 mods installed and my game was running fine until the last SMAPI update, then my game would not save, I spent hours trying to update my mods but could not fix all the problems. Eventually my game crashed completely and I had to delete ALL my mods and start fresh. I ended up leaving the game completely for Garden Paws. I am playing it now while waiting for my good pc to be repaired, but with only a few mods, as a lot of the mods i enjoyed in the past have not been updated in the last year.
Considering I had a large farm with 18 spouses and 21 children, I feel like I lost a whole family when my game crashed,

A lot of the data that was previously hardcoded is now remade into data strings. A lot of the code that is hardcoded has also been readjusted so modders can change or add new things. Yes, you can now create new weapons. The IDs for items has been completely revamped. Standard items will now have an (O) next to the item ID to indicate it's an object. Weapons will have (W), etc. This makes it possible to create new weapons, objects, craftables, etc without issues. Since before 1.6, a weapon and an object could share the same ID 'number' but the weapon ID was hardcoded so it made it difficult to create new variants. This new way fixes that. That is just an example.

You can see the full list of everything changing for modders and what will be possible on the Wiki: https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Migrate_to_Stardew_Valley_1.6

The alpha is updated daily so this wiki is also updated right alongside it.
