They cover a circle of 8 blocks, and you can lose some real valuable crops to crows. The more crops you have the more crows can arrive.
(You won't ever see them unless they eat a crop, but scarecrows will say stuff like "I've scared off 9 crows")

If you have a scarecrow, you won't even see the crows. That's kind of the point of them. If you click them it should tell you how many they've scared away.

And yeah, they're worth it. Crows are the worst. I had one show up and eat one of my crops every day whilst waiting for scarecrow crafting to unlock in the first place, and it was infuriating.

Yes, they're useful. If you click on them (can't recall if left or right click) they'll tell you how many crows they've "scared off." First few weeks it won't be much, but over time it builds up.

That said, if you have many large farm plots, the losses by crows don't seem to be major. More like ... a little annoying. Well, for regular crops. Losing a parsnip or even a blueberry plant now and then etc.

But losing a rare/expensive seed/s to a crow would be frustrating. To me.

YES! They stop crows eating your stuff. On a little farm (less than ~20 crops) crows wont show (Or very unlikely) after that YOU NEED them. I didnt and one day I lost ~25% of my crop. was devistating....

Well I had a crow once. even tough I had a scarecrow. I guess I misinterpret the effectivness ratio from the scarecrow. Thought it was quarter with 8 fields radius. But I guess it's more like a circle. I'm in fall now, but only had one like I mentioned. I didn't place the scarecrow differently...

Yeah, when starting out it can be a pretty big set back.

I kind of think crows are a bit RNG ... some of my chrs. have hardly seen any, some have seen way more.

Range can be seen here: http://stardewvalleywiki.com/Equipment

On my 2nd farm, (Only in Winter, Year 1), I have a scarecrow that has scared off 39 crows.

Also keep in mind that if you move the scarecrow the counter resets.

Congrats. I got my seed but I only have 12 days to winter so I think ill keep it in a chest. A chest only for that seed, today I sold my sword by accident happend to some valuable crops too. Can't be to cautiouse.
