Give him Essences.
They are easy to find and he likes them.

Drops from mobs in the mine.
Ghosts might drop Solar Essence for example.

or if youve opened the sewers, buy essences them from the shop.

Oh, well just kill things a ways into the mine. bunch of the later floor monsters drop essences.

There's a nice reward for getting 4 hearts with the wizard. I gave him a Rabbit's foot[dropped from a dragon serpent] on his birthday. That made him really happy. But yeah, he loves the essences, too.

Maybe for the achievement? But the Void and Solar essences are common, especially towards the bottom of the mind. Have loads of voids from killing shadow ppl

The wizard keeps talking about finding an apprentice. I deeply wish he could make the player his apprentice. On top of that, the Wikis say there is supposed to be something that happens at 2 hearts, though I have yet to trigger it (word is, it's in the Sewer, and I unlocked that). I got him up to all 10 hearts with no special cutscenes. :\

He makes the dwarf and the shadow guy stop fighting.

Do not hover over, unless you actually want to know why you gain hearts with the Wizard, spoiler beneath.

He unlocks the character customization in game in his back room if you get high enough hearts with him.
