The game is ok...but
I think it does not deserve the sandbox genre tag purely because the game is quite linener. You seem to have to do something before you can progress to something else.

I think it's getting multiplayer? Wouldn't sandbox make sense for multiplayer?

I personally would apply the term "sandbox" only to true sandbox games, like Minecraft or G-Mod.

But by the general definition, i see no problems with a sandbox tag. The game opens up almost completely during your first few days and you decide what you want to do.

Sandbox fits perfectly, especially after the "grandpa patch." You can create you farm into a brewery, an orchard, a tree-tapping syrup producing thing, focus on coops, barns, gem replicators, etc. You can focus on mining or fishing.

You can even dabble in all of the above.

Except it isn't linear at all. Grow crops, fishing, mining and none of it is ever forced on the player.

Most of the things that have "gates" before you can get them, are not *required* to actually play and farm per se. You don't even have to farm at all, outside of the first minor quests, if you so desired. Just fish and mine. Thus, I think the sandbox tag isn't that far off.

It is not a pure sandbox nor as sandbox as true building/exploration type games, but within its genre, it's sandbox-ish. Open ended (don't have to do the social, don't have to do the bundles, don't have to ...) and up to the player what goals they want to pursue.
