Iron mining
Okay I've been all the way down to Floor 120 in the mines and I can't seem to find any iron past the ice palace part of the mines. Is there some secret trick to finding the iron or do I just have to explore the lower levels for them since Iron is completely replaced by gold later on in the mines. I've got over 100 pieces of gold and next to nothing when it comes to iron and copper.

Iron deposits primarily appear between levels 40 and 80. Beyond 80 and you start focusing on gold deposits. So if you're trying to farm iron, focus on 40-80. (And if you're trying to farm copper, I'd suggest focusing on levels 5-40.)

Take the elevator to floor 70 and progress to floor 75 or 80, then repeat. This is good for iron, aquamarines and frozen geodes. Quite a few more items actually, but mainly iron ore.

When you farm iron between 40-80, it's a fabulous place to find coal, which is dropped by the Dust Spirits.

Is there a particular reason why you not simply buy the coal and iron ore from blacksmith?

In the beginning of the game, money is pretty tight.

On my latest playthrough I bought gold... but only to craft upgraded sprinklers, since I hadn't gotten to 80 yet.

money's tight and I'm new to the game. Trying to do things without resorting to guides and tips. I know I can buy the stuff but money is difficult to come by right now. The best I could do is getting a good amount from the mines.

I found that the best way to farm iron is to go to level 40, and clear all minerals and enemies from 41. If there is a ladder down take it. If there isn't then leave and run back. If you get a ladder down, then clear all the minerals and enemies on 42. After 42, leave. Rinse and repeat. I managed to get 250 iron ore in one day of farming like this.

Repeating floors 70-80 seems to get me a good amount of iron.
