Why are they only watering one tile?
You only have one tile tilled on either side of them. They can't water untilled ground. You need to make a box around them with your hoe.
Edit: By 8 tiles, it means the 8 tiles that directly surround it.
You do the math.
I agree that the first tier feel a little underwhelming, but the second tier and on are actually quite useful. Considering they free you up to do other things with those resources like mining, fishing, or planting more crops, they're actually fairly powerful relative to their cost.

BUFF.
That's like three hours of watering with the gold watering can and most, if not all, of your energy bar. Sprinklers are fine, imo.
is a bit of a pain to plant and harvest but unless you want to manually water this is a way to do it
