"omg i love it! nom nom nom"
Nah, man. W>W>S>S>D>A>D>A (select, start) ftw!
as Abby just shoves rocks up her bum and Leah just toss her a salad that you just bought at the bar.
Yes, there is a reward. The reward is slowly but surely inserting yourself into someone else's life and replacing their old friends with yourself. Abigail, for example, completely gives up on Sebastian if you dance with her. You go from unknown to best friend stealer in less than a month, so I think that is reward enough.
I had no idea talking to someone gave so many relationship points.. Thanks for that information.
Apparently not seeing as about a third to half of the single characters can be danced with year one. There is no "point" behind it. ConcernedApe simply didn't balance it well and as a result if you are interested in a certain character well then sucks to be you. If the point was not to be able to do it the first year then all of them should have been impossible. As that is not the case then it is simply poor design to force certain players to have to wait a year while others don't.
For players who prefer an experience, they'll basically be guaranteed to experience rejection in the first year. You're an outcast in a very tiny community, and you'll feel like it. It makes growing closer to the townsfolk feel much more rewarding when you experience some hardship at first.
For players who prefer to simply game the system with FAQs/guides, they can still accomplish what they want with directed effort, which will feel rewarding to them.
Perfect balance. Everyone wins.
First off the second to last paragraph of your statement is flat out false. "For players who prefer to simply game the system with FAQs/guides, they can still accomplish what they want with directed effort."
Tell that to those that want to romance Penny, Elliot, or Alex. Care to point out the guide with which those players can "game the system" to dance with them at the flower dance? Oh wait no you can't because those characters are flat out impossible to get to four hearts by the flower dance because the items they love are not available.
Meanwhile those who like Haley barely have to put effort in as giving her a single loved gift on her birthday gets you over half way to 4 hearts instantly meaning. Then there's Leah and Harvey whose loved gifts can simply be purchased from the saloon from day one for relatively cheap.
So we have at least one character who is mind numbingly easy to get to four, a pair who can be gotten there easily albeit with a little more effort, a couple that can be gotten there based on luck (Sebastian and Abigail can reach four but actually doing it requires luck in mine drops) and 3 who are impossible.
To put it simply
Haley- laughably easy
Leah- easy
Harvey- easy
Sam- normal (loves pizza which can be bought from the saloon but is pricy)
Maru- normal (gold can be smelted albeit pricy)
Abigail- RNG
Sebastian- RNG
Penny- impossible
Alex- impossible
Elliot- impossible
Now does that seem balanced to you? A system where the scaling varies from laughably easy to flat out impossible. No that isn't even close to balanced.
There's no problem with it being difficult requiring players to work for it or to know what they are doing to achieve it, that's fine. But it should be balanced where given enough effort all bachelors/bachelorettes could be raised to four hearts in time rather than some can and some you'll just have to wait until next year no matter what.
