The wiki says can be foraged from the beach in the fall. Not there yet as been playing very slowly on more than one character, but if not in the open, try using hoe as well.
Also if you see a mine cart or a bag in the mine right click on it, they often give a bunch of coal.
The 20 wood/coal is kind of painful. I have a ton of wood but most of my farm land is now cleared; it's not as renewable as it once was (I also don't need as much either). You can also get a recycling machine from the fishing skill and recycle some of the garbage you get from fishing. One of them (trash?) has a chance of giving you a piece of coal. That's not really a production method though.
I started buying coal from Clint. I just started year 3 and have a decent amount of money (over $250k, not a huge amount) so I can afford to buy large quantities. I just bought 64 for a bunch of bee boxes.
Unfortunately the rail cars and bags in the mine seem to be one time use only. Otherwise farming the mines could have been a nice method.
Either way, this is all pointless. Between the Dust Sprite drops, Geode drops and Fishing drops, it's nearly impossible to run out of Coal. Without even trying for it, you should have a surplus.
No one's ever going to need 50 Kilns. I wouldn't even bother with one.
