What are the shrines littered around the map?

I went up to the one by the homeless guy's tent, and happened to have my Rusty Level 1 Sword selected and pressed "A" on my controller, and it highlighted the sword in my inventory and a red bar emptied on top of the icon. I can do this over and over again, it doesn't seem to do anything. Anyone know what this is?

They are warp points. Once you unlock the ability to craft totems the shrines are the point you arrive at.
