And a brewing sim.
And a tamagochi.
And Legend of Zelda.
And Minecraft.
And purple underpants.
And most importantly: All that on PC instead of a Nintendo console, but without ripping anything off. There are rip-offs and games, that build upon their inspiratons and try to improve the genre. SV does the latter.
I'm surprised, that you haven't made the obligatory Farmville comparison yet.
Don't say that
However I have played back to nature and prior harvest moon games.
Sprites are quite similar, but not the same.
What they both have are is the farming convention and bit of relationship development.
What's different:
--More ways in farming made easier later on, but you have to progress to those points.
--Skills that you level up
--Basic museum that you help fill with artifacts and find missing books for (similar to animal crossing, but not as elaborate.)
--You can rearrange most furniture in your house as well change floor and wallpaper per room, as well buy or craft.
--Crafting things for farm. Some beneficial and some decorative, like paths. scarcrows with function, sprinklers.
--Fishing mini-game the starts off challenging, and with experience (XP) will get easier as you level up or use better equipment.
--Basic combat that is pretty much similar to how the original zelda did it, but with more angles; and a tad bit more to it; however it is not a complex system, and only in the mines.
--Seems quite a bit bigger than the HM games I have seen, farm included.
--Instead of static this is where barn or silo goes, you get to choose where the carpenter will build the structure, minus the greenhouse which is in the same spot.
--Lots of things to fill collection, as in see what items you have gotten before spread across a few different types.
--Endless game play, as in once you finish the story you can continue at your leisure.
--You can progress at your own pace, as suitors will remain single. Once you choose a suitor and marry it will not matter after that. You will have someone whom helps a little.
--Technically there is not a time limit to what you need to get done, unless you count the summery at year 3, which is just meaning what you have acheived in the eyes of "grandpa". Unlike the HM if you fail it won't matter as you can still continue on regardless.
--Several unlockables; which is areas, crafting, recipes, cosmetics, and so forth. So similar to HM, but more.
--You can marry all suitors no matter main character gender.
--Lot more crops and things to do in general to keep busy with.
That is roughly about all I can think of off hand, if I missed something; I am sure someone else will point it out, or even correct me on a few of the points above, if not elaborate more if they wish. But this is from what I have seen so far, and only a viewpoint from one whom has played animal crossing and harvest moon. It is more in relation to harvest moon than the other two common games it compares to, but with more. At least as far as HM is concerned.
Stardew Valley sits somewhere between HM and RF (there are monsters and combat but its not a massive part of the game like it is in RF) an has abit of Animal crossing influence too (in the completion of the museum).
I'm a long time fan of the genre as a whole, I've played every HM since 2, all but the most recent RF and various games like Animal Crossing and various city-builders besides, and I have to say I'm really enjoying SV. It feels alot like Harvest Moon DS (though i haven't quite put my finger on why, possibly the way you have a set of objectives to complete).
I love the way Stardew Valley has little daily 'quests' that are more like optional errands to run for various charectors and the date triggered quests give the game more direction and engage better then many of the HM's ever did.
The village feels better rounded then any HM or RF, with NPC's that live there but don't serve a purpose (no shop or special skill) and a proper country pub that is frequented by the various NPC's in belivable ways. The whole dynamic of the town is emersive even if many of the NPC's are just steriotypes.
I also feel the game in general is very well balenced and despite it being unpopular with a vocal segment of the player base i like the fishing minigame and think it works really well.
So yes it is very like HM an RF, but its deffinately on par with one of the good ones and much better then some of them!
And as Mr. Cabbage here said, this is the first complete version of its type on PC. Plus there is already mods for it, and if the community is strong enough around it -- I could see this game becoming more encompassing than Harvest Moon.
I didn't word it right. I was just meaning that it's silly to say a game is bad just because it is using similar gameplay plus some new things.
