Killing those jumpy black things on the ice levels in the mines. Before that you have to either make it on the special furnace that turns wood into charcoal or to get it from mining.

Chop a bunch of wood and throw it in furnaces. I also made a bunch of recyclers and I would go to the river and put them in there. The junk / trash you get from it can be turned into refined quartz / torches / 1-3 wood / 1 -3 stone / 1 - 3 coal. i would manage to walk away from one days worth + 20 coal just doing the crab pot thing. Keep in mind i only have 10 crab pots. all the cray fish etc i just turn to sashimi and gift to all the villagers for the reputation they give.

My method
Get to at least 60th floor in the mines, redo 61th to 64th lvl over and over again with the elevator. those floors has a wonderful spawn rate of dust sprites (the black jumpy thingy) which has a high chance of dropping coal and they often come in packs of 3-6.

if somehow on you dont see any dust sprites on the 61th floor just go back and load the floor again thru the elevator.

after killing a few hundred of those sprites, you should unlock's the dust sprite killing reward from Gil: the burglar ring. This ring increases the monster's drop rate, which will make the sprites drop alot more frequently.

How many do you have to kill? Like 300? The grind is real XP

500. Its worth it, love the grind.

with the ring it nets me around 50-60 coals every run.

I have 4 coal machines which make 20 wood into 1 coal... I know bad ratio... but it's really easy to farm wood.

the mines are your best bet, in the early game you can typically clear 5 lvls of the mine per day(it gets faster once you upgrade your tools and weapons), once you get to the mine lvl 40 to 60 you get a new enemey called dust sprites they are a great source of coal.

i just realised a witch appeared over my slime farm turning my slimes into black ones when killed they drop coal
