You know, I DIDN'T have a problem with fishing.
Then I started doing it "for real" in order to fill out the community center. And you know what? Screw the fishtank. Screw it to hell. Some of this is ABSURD. Fish just FLY around that meter, no warning, no startup, just BAM! Top. WHAM! Bottom. There's no way to keep up! There's no start up time, "HIT! *Top of meter*"

I don't get it...I just don't get it. The controls are not meant for these things to go flying around the meter like that. They just aren't. Also, after fishing for nearly two hours through the whole of winter (goodbye mine time I wanted) I still am missing one or two from every bundle. Do they only spawn in certain seasons? Times? Are THOSE the erratic-ass fish that I can't catch?

Fishing sucks. Everybody complaining about Grandpa...Fishing ruins the game for me.

You cant catch them due to your fishing level. If you have max fishing, using the right lure for the right fish, and use fish skill boosting food, the harder fish are far less jumpy. Just ignore them for now, and go for the small fry

i know fishing can be challenging.
But there are different seasons + evening/night and sunny/rain/snow fish so, look up the wiki for each fish and best time to fish for them.

1. make food that give +fishing, makes the bar bigger.
2. get the lure that makes the bar go down less fast then usual (saved me allot of time in the beginning)
3. just keep on fishing till you are higher lvl (each lvl gives you a bit of a larger bar to put the fish in between so)
4. get the best rod (dunno why but most fish are caught easier with it + lure)

i wish you good luck on your fishing matey arr!

Level more.. use bait and bobbers and food if you need a buff.. There is still some tricky fish but its more manageable as you level.. And with the cork (or trap for some) bobber..

I agree though fishing isn't very fun.

Many fish are season, time, and weather specific (or at least one of those three, sometimes all three of those three).

Fish also having varying levels of difficulty. Some of them are downright obnoxious. But with high fishing skill, an Iridium Rod, and maybe a Trap Bobber, they're generally catchable. Certainly, all of the ones necessary for the Community Center are, if you're properly equipped.

But some of them are almost impossible to manage if you don't have an upgraded rod and decent skill. Early in my game, I thought "Oh I'll just go catch a catfish." And the catfish was all "Lol nope".

The only one I'm missing for the Community Center now, though, is the Walleye. Didn't get the opportunity during my first Fall, so I'm waiting on second year Fall to roll around.

On the topic of "when to get fish X", I suggest reading the page on the wiki
http://stardewvalleywiki.com/Fish
It helped me a lot

Just be warned that on occasion, the wiki lies. You can't catch Walleye in the winter. =(

Edit: Ah, I see the Wiki has been updated to reflect this. I would have loved to know that during my first-year winter...

when u fish some easy fishes, stay there and keep fishing. up your fishing levels first before u tackle those harder fishes. In late game, you can practically catch everything without blinking, even the legendary fishes

Some of the legendaries get easy, yes, but not all. I had an easy time with the Anglerfish and the Mutant Carp, but the Glacierfish made me curse a lot. It could also be that I just suck at the fishing minigame. Yes, probably that. =P
you are complaining because you arent doing it right......

You start with 0 level in fishing = you never hold a fishing rod before, no idea how to reel the line. It's frustrating at first. But same with harvestmoon back to nature. I never caught anything in that game other than trash lol. At least here I manage to reach lvl 10 in fishing and caught tons of fishes on the way.

i have a lot of fun with the current fishing system, i hope it wont be nerfed.
fishing become easier along with your fishing level increase, as it should be.
you can even eat buffs.

by the way carps are not fun at all, keeping far too steady.

Agreed. I'm trying to level fishing myself and it's just an unpleasant grind. I really don't want to mod it to be easier, but that's looking better and better every time I play that mini game.

I wish the rods worked more like the farming tools, only requiring resources and money to upgrade instead of being unlocked by fishing level.

I just got the recipe for a +3 fishing dish. I'm going to try and cook that and hopefully that will help enough to make mini game bearable.

Wait wait wait wait wait. Better poles? How? I can't upgrade at the blacksmith, the dude doesn't sell any new ones aside Fibreglass (I have it) and I'm level five fishing...when do I get new poles?
