trash cans are what you use to throw your trash. pretty much its only useful when you're inventory is full and you want to get rid some to get that one new thing...

If you level fishing you can craft a machine to turn them into artisan goods or other usefull stuff.

You can recycle trash items later (ones that are called "Trash").. To more useful stuff but its up to you if its worth it.. Personally I just store it all cause why not..

You can also get recycling machine from one of the community center awards.
