(Actually, I guess it's not so much "one or the other" as it is "Both of them, or only the second one." So I'm leaning towards "Both of them.")
The moment credits begins rolling.
No trolling here sire. I am "legitimately" intrigued by this game and I am quite the fan of management games. What I am curious over is whether there is an endgame and how long it takes for the average player to reach it.
This is an endless game, there is no credits rolling, I have almost 70 hours already and I still want to play more, way better than those games with "credits rolling" that I finish in 15 hours and never play again. If you consider the community center repair as finishing the game it usually takes around 60 hours or more to complete.
They don't. Also the credits would be really short.

:P
In reality the main story of the game with the community center takes around 2 in-game years minimum to complete which is around 50-60 hours.
Are there story events that occurs during the game or are you left to your own vices?
The game never ends but there's a sort of a review of how well your doing a couple years in that I think most of us consider the "end"
Various relationship events / calendar events / things like the earthquake that opens up more areas of the map.
You can look at the wiki here for a lot of the info:

There is no "Beat the game" point. It's open-ended, with no "finish." There is an "evaluation point" after two years of in-game time, but that doesn't end the game. For reference, I just finished my first full year this morning, and I have 50+ hours in the game (not all of that was spent on the current playthrough, but I think my current playthrough is in the mid-to-upper-30-somethings so far).
