Its say 8 tiles empty. Does it mean overall tiles 8(2 empty for N W E S Direction) or 8 tiles for all direction? I wanna plant it in winter but don't wanna waste my money on tiles thing. any help?

It means the 3x3 square with the sapling in the center. This square has to have nothing but dirt in it (not even tilled soil) until the tree is fully grown. After it is fully grown you can put things around it if you like.

Each tree has its own 3x3 square of personal space that it requires and this space cannot overlap with the square from another tree. So the trees have to have at least 2 spaces between them, the game won't let you place them any closer. That counts for diagonals as well, their 3x3 squares cannot overlap in any direction.

Thanks.

I've heard that two can grow if it's a diagonal, though I haven't tested this myself.

Yeah, haven't even bothered replanting trees yet other than a couple for taps.

Just thought it bore mentioning, in case someone wants to make a massive tree farm or something.

I've put cobblestone around my sapling and it seems to be growing fine (so I assume pathways are ok to put around).

Yup, an apple. Started late spring, put cobble around it right away - it's been growing. (no longer in first stage)

Well I just plant the way Ansalem1 said in 3x3 square but it would take time to grow but i wanna if pathway can be place near them or not?

Guys, I just noticed something when i plant the sapling if tree overlap its tiles it will tell us that another tree is near and i try to put object near the place before plant it and said nothing. My guess is they can be plant near object not tree? Any help with this?

Fruit trees can't share space with other trees, but they can share space with anything else. But it won't grow if the space is occupied. You can plant it but it won't grow.

Thanks again.
So I have trees set up like the following picture, but continue the pattern two more times for a total of 9 trees.

XXXXXXX
XXXOXXX
XOXXXOX
XXXXXXX

Y'all are saying none of the trees will grow to maturity? Are y'all sure? How long does it take to grow a tree?

I offset the two rows so that I can see the tapper.

I place like this:

XXXXXX
XOXXOX
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
XOXXOX
XXXXXX

In horizontal well atleast it grows. Thanks for the reply.

Wild trees will grow in that placement. Nit fruit trees.
Yeah, they're Pine, Oak, and Maple trees. So they'll grow but fruit trees' empty space can't occupy the same empty space of another fruit tree?

That is correct. =)
Here's my wood trees.

They were all planted at the same time. Every tree has empty space around them, but the trees share the empty space of another tree. Notice the bottom left most tree hasn't even sprouted yet. There's also a sapling in the bottom right that grew on it's own that I didn't notice. I'll cut that one, but I don't understand why the other trees haven't grown yet when the wood trees can share empty spaces.
