Catching high-difficulty fish
Has anyone found that your hidden luck stat (the one that is boosted by Lucky Lunch, Fried Eel, Spicy Eel, Pumpkin Soup, etc.) makes catching high-difficulty fish easier?

My story is that I was trying to get the Lava Eel from floor 100 in the mines. Determined to catch the thing, I tried on a day when the Fortune Teller gave a good outcome, equipped the Cork Bobber on my Iridium Fishing Rod and broke out the Trout Soup for +1 Fishing (for a total of level 10 fishing).

In a total of 30 casts, I saw it only twice and caught it once (6% appearance, at least in this one instance).

So, I guess I'm asking if I'm imagining things or have other people tried similar things to catch things like the Lava Eel and the Pufferfish.

I never have any issue catching the pufferfish. Just need to go fishing between noon to before evening. I usually catch a few a day. Haven't tried with the mine fish yet. But if I had trouble, maybe I'll try this out!

Luck matters. Don't bother fishing for legendary fishes and octopus on unlucky days. That octopus scared the fk out of me, it was more difficult than some of the legendary fishes on lucky days.

For the lava eel, it doesn't seem to matter much, I still get tons of trash on lucky days.

So which is better for these fish.. Lucky lunch or dish of the sea? (+3 luck vs +3 fishing)..

Don't know if the bonus to fishing matters if you have it at 10. Only if it goes over 10. Only the dev can tell.

It can't have hurt, and at best it could have overflowed the fishing variable.

It makes a difference. Level 13 fishing has a slightly bigger bar than the level 10 fishing bar. Not sure about luck though, I'll have to test around with that.

It goes over. Dish of the sea got me from 9 to 12

If I'm not mistaken you can have both at the same time?

Confimed that luck plays a HUGE part in the difficulty of catching fish. Tried on an unlucky day to catch the Glacierfish and it was impossible. Tried the very next day on a good day and took only two tries to catch it.

I'm going to go on a limb here and say that, once you get your Fishing to rank 10, modifying your Luck matters more. Try to prioritize Luck in catching hard-to-catch fish, especially if your Fishing is already at rank 10.

I'd agree, as I find the +3 fishing when you're level 10 to barely do anything.

Going to try this luck thing. I dedicated today for fishing, got some of the fishes I still needed to complete the achievement, even 1 legendary but damnn the octopus is HARD! Lost it everytime

Just be aware that some people have not seen the Legend fish without the +3 Fishing buff. I agree that the slight difference to the bar isn't much, but I wonder also if it affects cast distance.

Can someone test this? (e.g. Try catching the Legend without the +3 Fishing buff, maybe use Luck instead?) I'm on my second playthrough and have only 5 fishing skill atm.

I know it might not make a difference but. I've caught the crimson fish as well as the mutant carp with little more than an iridium rod/bait/and a trap bobber.. The trap bobbers seem to work best for me. And I am only level 9 fishing skill and have drawn both of them in... I'll be working on the legend next spring and the angler fish now that its fall in my game but.. Patience is most certainly key.. There were so many times and atleast 2-3 lures each legendary (always trap bobber) just to keep them on my line long enough for me to catch up. I haven't used anything other than the 'fancier' spinner you get from a certain holiday event just to reel in regular fish.. But try a trap bobber it might give you just enough time to add a bit of a saving grace. :)

I have never used +3 fishing/luck, already caught 4/5 of the legend fishes, just waiting for winter now for the last one.

Indeed, the trap bobber is a good one, though I have found the cork bobber to be easily as useful. THe Crimsonfish and Mutant Carp are the tamest of the legendaries... you'll have more fun when you get to the Glacierfish! :-)
