the trees can grow in any season, they just dont bear fruit until 'their' season

I put them down day 1 of spring in year 2. I bought them the day before from Pierre. Most were fully grown by summer, but a few lagged behind by a day or two.

I heard they will grow during the winter. I should have planted at least the spring ones then.

The earthquake is a one time scripted event that has nothing to do with crops. Plants do die at the end of each season (except for corn which lasts for summer and fall). Fruit trees don't die but are only harvestable in their respective season.

I don't know about fruit tree saplings though. I thought I read a post from someone who claimed saplings planted a few days before the season changed actually died at the end of the season. That was a while ago though; I don't know if what they claimed is true. I played it safe and planted them on day one.

I think if they aren't beyond the first stage of growth, a season change might kill them as they do young wild trees. However, they do grow in winter--and all other seasons--just fine but only bear fruit when their season rolls around. I'm on year 2 Summer with all 6 types of fruit trees planted. You do not need to plant on day 1, but I would give them enough time to grow at least once before a season change to be safe. And make sure that you keep the 8 squares immediately touching them clear or they will not grow!
