Yes, actually, you can plant trees in the greenhouse. Please be sure you know what you are talking about so you don't give out false information.
Sounds like you had something in one of the 8 tiles surrounding the sapling. You can't have anything surrounding it, not even hoed soil. As long as nothing is in those tiles, fruit trees will grow in any season, even winter. They just bear fruit in one season, you can freely plant them in others.
Though, the advantage to having the fruit tree in the greenhouse would be that it produces fruit no matter the season outside.
Screenshot? Not sure why they are stumps in the first place.
It was a bug that got patched, yes.
Its Crazy, I know. But its true.
Small buildings have that affect on things, I guess.
(edit 1) FYI. I'm saying that it's not a nerf, its a bug fix.
The only reason when inside the tree seems to be smaller, is because of the graphical dimensions of the game.... If it was N64 HM style graphics, Then It'd probably be obvious as to why they wouldn't work, instead of "hmm... looks like it could fit! should work!"
To be fair the buildings in this game use TARDIS technology, your house, barn, and coop all increase in size on the inside while remaining the same size on the outside, after all.
