The steps needed :
1. You hoe down the ground and you do a small field or a big one .. you decide ;p
2. You put fertilizer if you want. Skip this step if you don't have any.
3. You put your seed on the ground where you hoed the ground.
4. You water down the field with your watering can. (If you have sprinklers you still need to water down for the first day but not for the rest of the days.
5. You wait 10 days but you need to water down your crops everyday if you don't have sprinklers.
6. Profit
You should easily be able to tell if they are grown if you go close to them and you see a green cross over a plant that means you can gather it and the pictures of the plant changes when it's ready. You can see the fruits or vegetable on the ready crops.
Is that what you were doing ?
As soon as plants are ripe for harvesting you just have to stepü next to thewm and a "+"-sign will be displayed (and you can click on them to harvest).
You do count the day you plant them if you water them the same day.
Grow Times
All listed grow times count from the day AFTER planting. Day of planting is not counted.
