How to fish/fishing tips?

Hi all,

Anybody have tips for fishing? Right now I have tried so many times to catch a fish but have always been unsuccessful. From what I understand I have to left - click to keep the fish within the green bar but the issue I find is the bar is so unresponsive especially considering the fish icon moves up & down all the time.

Anybody have any good tips for fishing?

Practice makes perfect; I'm not saying it's the best, but if you play the fishing mini-game at the Stardew Valley Fair in Fall (50g/game I believe) you'll have ample opportunities to practice catching fish; you only have a time of close to 2 minutes each time, but that's time enough.

Really, though, practicing is the only way to get better. The trick I've found (and others, too) is you need to use many brief clicks - do not hold down the button and then let go after a few seconds, because the bar will go nuts. Especially near the top/bottom, it'll bounce or start becoming difficult to control. Do your very best to follow the fish.

I wish there was more I could say; the game takes a lot of practice to really get good, and even after you practice there will be fish that throw you for a loop.

maybe use a controller instead of mouse? this was better for me. i only have the standard mouse and clicking sucks....
with controller it gets more intuitive.

and yes: practis practis practise...

and i thought, the ocean or lake down the farm are more difficult then the river or the lake near mine.

Here's what I did:

You got your first bamboo rod and your fishing proficiency is 1. Just fish where the fishes are easy to catch. Try the river inside the Pelican Town. Fish there like there is no tomorrow and get your proficiency to level 2/level 3.

You will see it will be easier by now to fish on the ocean/lake. Do it. When the first summer comes, buy a new rod, the fiberglass rod. By the end of summer you should have Fishing proficiency around level 4/level 5


When the fall comes, buy the new rod, Iridium Rod, by now your fishing proficiency should be 6/7. I'm sure that by then you will see how easy fishing becomes!

oh and if you spam the button, and then do nothing for a few sec the green line falls to the end. spam more intuitive. i mean the time between two clicks longer or very fast.

You just have to get the hang of the the timing of your clicks or pauses with the fishes movement.

Just get a feel for the way the green indicator moves and you're good. It gets easier as you level your fishing skill and get better poles/bait/tackle.

If you're using a mouse try this trick and see if it helps.

Tap the mouse button instead on holding it down and releasing. If you tap with a steady pace you can keep up with most fish and it's easy to alter the rhythm when you need to speed up or slow down. It really helps when using the bamboo pole in early game. It can turn a frustrating experience around if you get the hang of tapping the button.

Anyway, maybe this tip will help someone catch fish.

left click or A lifts the bar - right click or X lets it drop.
also - listen to the fortune teller on the tv and try it on a lucky day
and eat trout soup wich you can buy at the fisher - it raises your fishing level temporarely wich makes the bar bigger.
It gets very much easier in higher levels - and sell the fish! otherwise there will be no levelup

just keep fishing, as your level rises it does get a bit easier to catch fish.

I hate how fishing works tbh, but you have to do it for the community center, quality fertilizer etc. You just have to keep grinding and grinding. As you get skill ups you get better rod but tbh rod doesn't seem to be a significant improvement it's more about skill level that increases your green bar's size. The only improvement rod gives you is you get tackles and lure to increase chances of hit and a better control on the fishing bar, so iridium bar is necessary for a relatively easier fishing experience. Even after all the improvements fishing kind'a sucks. I bought some of the rare fish for the aquarium from the ♥♥♥♥♥, check it regularly.
