help me somehow I missed taking the dog

What am I missing out on, can I get a the dog later in the game?

I didn't get my pet until third or fourth week into the first spring. There was initially a bug with this, but CA addressed it in one of the first patches and confirmed that if you somehow miss the first pet-receiving event, there is another opportunity to get the pet later. He didn't clarify what "another opportunity" means exactly, though.

Yeah i regret not choosing the cat at character creation. Almost at my third year now and I can't go back now for a cat :/. That dog has tormented me for ages....

Why? What does he do? While we're talking about it...do I have to feed the cat? He's often buy the bowl but I can't put anything in it.

Ok, thank you. I talk to him every day but don't have any hearts by his name. I could be looking in the wrong spot too. Just assumed it didn't matter.

Crap. Middle of summer and I went to upgrade my watering can. I assumed it would take a few days but thought I'd risk it and just cancel if it was but I didn't get a chance to cancel. Hopefully it's only a couple days

I don't think you have to. I just pet the cat every day and he's fine. The game once flashed me the message that my cat loves me, so I guess it's fine.

Maybe it's like in real life where dogs are really hyperactive and high maintenance and kinda dumb but all they want more than anything in the world is your attention, whereas cats are almost zero maintanence and will literally love you more for leaving them alone.
