Villagers Favourite Gifts: how do you discover them?

I really want to discover for myself, but would like a quick pointer in the right direction.
(I know the guide section and wiki has complete lists, but I want to discover them for myself)

I looked in people's homes and rooms hoping to find clues as to what they would like, but I found nothing. Is it just trial and error? Should I be throwing random gifts at villagers and note the reactions for next time? How did you discover what a villager's favourite gift is?

I don't know if there are other ways, but sometimes people will randomly mention what their relatives like if they like you. So you are talking to your friend Shane and he'll say something like "my aunt (Marnie) really likes such thing". Similarly, they warn you about what their relatives hate "my son really hates stone for whatever reason".

So just need to be socialising more and chatting everyday? Thanks for this. I was feeling weird spending too much time in people's bedrooms

Yes, talk to them. When you give them their favorite items they will say so. So far only managed to find one.

This is how I do it, Understand their personality through what they say and/or how they're dressed, such as leah is down to earth, willy is a fisherman, Jas is a little girl, ,linus is a hobo. give them gifts accoriding to these personalities.
