Chicken Coop (Value)
So I paid 4k for the small coop, and then 50 gold per hay and all it produces is an egg which isn't even worth as much as the hay (iirc). I don't get it, am I missing something? I'm working on a silo to cut the hay costs, but still, this is seriously not profitable.

You're not supposed to be buying hay. You grow it. You need that silo.

Also you can just let the chickens out to let them feed on the grass. Also, you can put the eggs in the mayonnaise machine and it will DOUBLE their price.

Build the silo then harvest wild grass with the scythe,it will auto dump hay into your silo. Open your coop and let them roam/eat. They won't eat all of the hay you put outevery day and they'll be generally happier chickens. Also "pet" your chickens every morning. For return on your investment when they hit one or two hearts they'll start producing large eggs. Craft the mayo-maker and a large egg will always (at least it seems) produce a gold star mayo.

Yeah, you need a silo. And grass. If you have grass growing and let the animals out then they'll eat that instead of hay. Hay is only necessary for rainy days and winter. You definitely don't want to buy hay unless you have to. Also befriend Marnie. She sent me 30 hay as a gift once.

The chickens themselves can be sold for a small profit once they reach 5 hearts. They sell for something like 1040g, so about 200g profit. Turn the eggs into mayonnaise (and milk from cows and goats into cheese) for a larger profit. As the chickens get happier (i.e. more hearts) they have a better chance of laying a "large egg" which is worth more and the mayo from that I think is worth more. Or maybe the large eggs produce the gold star mayo I'm getting every once in a while.

Once you upgrade the coop you can get ducks, and rabbits on the last upgrade. I don't know if those are more profitable. I have one duck and one baby rabbit so don't have much experience with them yet.

I see! Thank you all. Tips of getting clay for the silo? I've plowed loads of land, including the beach, in my hunt for clay.

Also, let them roam without being fenced in or expand my fence to include grass/hay?

Someone here claimed the hoe-able sections of the mine gave lots of clay, but I haven't needed to try that yet. I get a fair amount from the worm spots.

I'll give that a go, thanks :)
