Giving gifts to your spouse on your anniversary could have double value (effectively giving your spouse a second birthday; although they'd presumably get you something as well).
I reckon that for character birthdays, simply recieving gifts in the mail (maybe only from characters with 2 or more heart rating?) would be the best option. Of course, players will have to make sure they have the inventory space before opening their letters; but there's nothing to prevent taking a few trips lol. That gives the added bonus that completing the Community Centre's bulleitin board will mean every villager gives you a present on your birthday.
It would be kinda funny, my wedding anniversary would be on Spirit's Eve. I got married to Penny on Fall 27, Year 1
