No, don't put two gates right next to each other. Just put one down with fence on either side.
I've seen the "fence with a cross bar" too. In that case I had tried to put a gate between a fence section and the edge of the map. Didn't work. Had to put a single gate in between 2 fence sections. I don't know if a gate works on fence corners.
Then I came back after reading your reply and thought it might be an order thing - like putting the fence down before the gate wouldn't register or something so I tried it the other way, gate first. It worked this time. Just to check, I did it the original way. It also worked. Nope, I'm flummoxed why I was having no joy before. Went back to my coop with its unfinished fenced off area, installed the gates where I'd planned to put them (and couldn't before) and everything is fine now. Oh well :)
