How does gifting work?

So this one day I gave someone a gift. The empty space on the people page filled up a spot with a gift box icon. I took it to mean you can gift someone twice a day, but the following day, or the day after that, I don't remember, the box was still filled in and I haven't given them anything since the first time.

Can I just gift them all sorts of stuff with no consequence? For example can I gift people stone just to raise their friendship even if it's little? I know there are favorite gifts but i'm not far enough to focus on specific gifts.

They have dislikes. Stone is universal for that.

You can gift someone twice a week, Sunday being the last day of the week. And you can only gift each person once a day, so not twice in a row on the same day.

Everyone has different tastes, what they like and don't like. And if you give them a stone, they will NOT like it and lose a heart. When I first started I just browsed the wiki and jotted down a couple of things that individual people "loved" and "liked" and stuck to it.

Also, simply talking to people every day will slowlyyy get their hearts up also.

Thanks for the answers. Anyone specific you should start befriending? How about easy items to gift in the beginning? Only got 2 hours on me so far.

I found the easiest gifts were found in the mine - Quartz for Sebastian, Quartz and Amethyst for Abigail, Amethyst for Clint. Most gemstones for Emily. You start in Spring and there a few people who like the flowers you can pick. Gems and flowers for Haley. Fruit is good for most people's friendships though there are a couple who will moan and groan about it.

And outside of Pierre's shop is a calendar, if you gift people on their birthday they will appreciate it greatly ;3
