Depending on how late in Spring you are, Cauliflower and Potatoes are both good crop choices. I wouldn't recommend Beans unless you can plant them very early in the season (the same is true for a lot of "regrowable" crops, but not all—Blueberries are so profitable that getting them planted on the first day of summer isn't as important).
One good round of planting and harvesting cauliflower and potatoes should give you more than enough cash to get both the backpack and the next round of seeds.
so i'll wait to have more money then take the backpack....
Also, if you go to the area on the south side of the river that runs past Leah's house, you can often find (in Spring) some foraging opportunities in the form of wild onions.
Also, to clarify: Don't fish in the ponds on your farm, as you'll only find trash there.
The river that runs through down, or the river and lake near Leah's and Marnie's, are good spots. Smallmouth Bass and Carp are pretty easy to catch.
