Report a translation problem
It can happen, not necessarily will though. My first save is in summer of year 7 and has never lost a critter. My second save lost a chicken in his first year. I'll believe it's a random event that _can_ happen, not a penalty that _will_ happen if you leave a door open.
If it was a bloodcurtling scream then that's just weird. O_o
if you locked your animals outside, then they might have died. when they die they just disappear, BTW.

Actually, from some research on the wiki, they are sufferable to predatory attack if you were to leave them out all the time.
To prevent this, use fences or check your farm at night. If allowed to roam free, they can get stuck on random objects or buildings, meaning there's a chance they'll be attacked.
