Chicken Coop Worth It After Update?
I was reading that a lot of folks were recommending that you not build a chicken coop because it will drain all of your money, and grass doesn't grow fast enough to feed them. I think it ended up being that you only got 100g/day from the eggs of 4 chickens, but have to spend 200g/day feeding them.

I read that the new update makes grass grow faster, so I was going to ask if folks think chicken coops, and other animals, are worth it now? I'm hoping so, because I generally like raising animals better than crop growing...

I wouldn't bother with chicken coops until you can get the mayo machines. The eggs themselves aren't worth much of anything.
I'd still bother with them before the mayo machine, as it takes time to build their hearts up. The more hearts, the more large eggs.

And grass is absolutely WONDERFUL now.

NEVER EVER sell the eggs they are absolutely worthless. Let them outside into the grass they wont run away you dont even need to fence them in. Lots of grass grows at the start of spring, and patches keep coming to make grass starters grow faster. Once you have a delux coop you no longer even have to feed them as it does it automatically for free. Also, later on you want to rotate the chickens out for ducks, their mayo sells for 2x more but takes 2x as long for them to lay an egg, however, you put their eggs in an incubator to hatch new oens instead of buying them, once they get to max heart levels, sell them for 10-11k, rinse and repeat. Make much money.

I have 4 delux coops on my farm and they make a beautiful profit without much effort, just give them hugs everyday and plop eggs into mayo machine, all done easily before 9am even hits.

100-150g for mayo
200-300g for duck mayo + 110g for duck feather
375g for cloth + 450g for foot

And after the update, my farm is pure grass. I'm not joking. So food is a zero issue unless they patch the grass again because:

I think they're worth it, especially to get them a little earlier so you can get their friendship up in preparation for winter to supplement your abysmal income then while you work on unlocking the greenhouse.

By the time I unlocked the greenhouse, I was doing 600 crops with quality sprinklers, the small amnount of room in there even for us ejust in winter makes me not want to even bother, and just use my time more wisely in the endless mines getting iridium and selling all the rubies and such, or even spend time befirending people in winter.

Fill it with ancient fruit and you don't even have to bother replanting the things though.

That was exactly what I was thinking, going to get a seed maker just so I can fill up -slowly- the greenhouse with them. I only have one at the moment and it has not even fully grown yet =P

Thanks for the input everyone-- I think I'll get a silo for now, as planned, and see where my money is at after. Glad to hear the grass is growing faster!

I started with 1 seed on Spring 1 and I had 83 when winter hit. They multiply faster than you think, the seed maker makes 1-3 seeds each.

I don't see where people keep getting this idea that chickens are so expensive to maintain. The only thing I can figure is that when people say "grass doesn't grow fast enough to feed them" that is because they are chopping down the grass for the silo and feeding the chickens by putting out dry grass inside the coop every day, which isn't necessary.

All you have to do is open the coop door and let them roam outside in the tall grass and you don't have to feed them anything. So feeding them is essentially free. Rainy days and winter are the only times that chickens cost money to feed. And if you stocked a bunch of grass in the silo over spring/summer/fall, then it's not really costing you anything then either.

I agree. After he updated grass, animals are free to maintain. They're only expensive to buy initially.
Klumpatsch Mar 3, 2016 @ 11:29pm
You literally drown in grass now since the update. I've got 18 animals and have no problem feeding them anymore, and on the last day of autumn I filled TWO silos with hay (and there even was more left). So yes, it's more than worth it now.
