I got really close using the 'trapper' anchor but then he started flipping up and down the bar so fast that I couldn't keep it on him

You mean a legendary fish? I've only caught one of them so far, but I thought it was easy, lmao.

Then again I'm at like level 9 fishing with iridium rod ... if you have problems, level up more, and maybe trapper lure (the only one I like tbh).

Does fishing level make a difference? I'm fishing off the dock of the island you need 300 wood to repair the bridge (with the coral) if you go to the far right of the dock and fix there you often get a 'fish with a hat' He's extremely difficult to catch

Not sure if fishing level makes a difference my level is 7 I believe

Each level adds +1 fishing rod proficiency.

I used a trap bobber. You can use a food that gives +1-3 fishing too if you still cant catch it after that.
