It's sort of like harvest moon but with alot more things that you can do.

It's a Chucklefish version of Harvest Moon, which is appropriate both literally and in design/aesthetic.

It's a 'small game in a small town' feel with no real way to fail, which masks a fairly ruthless and complex time management sim. You aren't punished for failure, but success doesn't come fast either.

The crux of the game is managing your progress. There's never enough time/energy in a day, which often leaves you always feeling like you're falling behind. Yet, in the end, progress is made in steps when you do what you can to plan ahead within the few scant minutes you have before night falls. You can't simply sit and stare at your farm and work things out, because time is ticking, fast.

This is complicated further with the social agenda. Travelling can burn many daylight hours when it's time to leave the farm. Tracking down the various villagers can often be a long series of errands and goose-chases that can chip into your time you'd rather spend fishing or dungeon diving, or consume the rest of your day entirely.

It's a simple game at first, but there's a depth and complexity with managing your resources (Time being most precious), that never goes out of its way to make you feel bad for coming up short. There's always tomorrow, next season, or next year.

I perfered the 2D harvest moon games to the 3D ones by far. Stardew is great in my eyes.

It's Harvest Moon, mixed with Minecraft, mixed with Animal Crossing, to make the coolest game EVER!!!

Ah yes, Chucklefish the publisher who did... adver-.. no. Uh, assi-.. no that would involve Tiy to stop breaking Starbound long enough to notice. Uh...

Let's give the credit where it's due to the solo dev.

It's still closer to harvest moon imo. The combat is very basic compared to rune factory. It literally feels like a great harvest moon game, with a little combat in the mines (Kinda like how there were monsters in harvest moon DS)
Harvest Moon has had combat in the mines like in Mineral Town and DS.
This game just gives you a weapon lol
