How do you earn money with animals?
I've meanwhile chickens and cows but when i sell eggs and milk it doesn't make that much profit. So basically it's not worth the effort somehow or am i doing something wrong in this case?

Make mayo maker for eggs to get more money.. and chease maker for cows.

Its pretty unprofitable though yeah... Considering how profitable crops can be..

I was playing just yesterday and realized I'm paying 50g for hay every day to get 25g eggs. I guess you have to plant grass and harvest it into a silo (that's a HUGE investment to turn a 10g grass plant crop into a 25g egg). I'm assuming as their hearts go up the eggs will be worth more and I'll get a return on my investment even with buying 50g hay so I'm trying not to sweat it.

You need to use the maker machines in order to make more money. The large eggs/milk also yield a gold star quality item from the machines to make more money from.

Don't forget you can sell your livestock as they age. They increase in value, so you can make quite some money off of that when they're fully grown, I guess. :)

Mayo goes up in prices quite a bit espacially with large eggs. Mayo can sell for more than 100. But yes- animals are hard to unlock and need maintanance, that can not be automated (like sprinklers), yet animals do not return as much money as farming does.

the main use of animals I've found is simply making the better food for yourself/gifts so you can do more planting

Get some small cash with the processed product (mayo and cheese), they're worth a lot more than the original thing and will more than pay for the hay, keep making it while you wait for the hearts to fill and for the animal to grow older, breed it to get 3 more animals from it and sell it for a very high price, rinse a repeat.
As other people said it requires a lot of work and still won't give anything close to what you can get with a fully automated farm, but it's fun to care for them if you like it.

With the buff to grass expansion rates in 1.04, plant some grass. If animals eat grass they don't consume hay. Animals prefer to eat grass to hay anyway. If the field of grass is big enough, you won't run out of grass.

also i think a big part of the animals is for the community restoration, theres a lot of bundles that require animal stuff. thats what im using them for

You're supposed to manufacture the animal goods in order to make a real profit. Cheese, Mayo, Cloth...all of that stuff.

It doesn't seem that way, but the little bits add up over time.

A coop with 4 chickens over the course of a month could lay around a hundred eggs or so if well maintained, which is about 10,000g a month in mayo. Give or take for skipped eggs and larges.

You can skim some off that for your own cooking needs, which is also handy.

The game needs serious rebalancing. I'm earning 20,000 every few days from blueberries yet I am going to take 3 years to earn my money back on my barn, even with the rancher specialization.

i dont see how it would take you that long.. like the guy above just said, a full barn/coop being maintained every day and turning the items into artisan goods will earn you a much larger proffit on animal goods. 3 years? do you only have 1 chicken with no hearts or something?

i only have 2 chickens and 2 cows, between those 4 im getting a steady stream of income

Dont forget you can make more chickens from the eggs and then sell the chickens when they are adults.
