No. Stardew Valley is not a alternative to Rune Factory. Yes SV has a simple Combatsystem but Focus is on Farmlife like the Harvest Moon Games.
Things that makes Rune Factory 4 better:
- Combat
- much more Crafting (only Armor/Weapons)
- Dating System
- Story
- real Dungeons
- Skills, RPG Part in general
Stardew Valley is a great Game and in my opinion better then the original Harvest Moon Franchise but its not a Game like Rune Factory.
RF: RPG with Sim Part
SV: Lifesim with a bit Combat
The farming however, so much better in this game, not only do you get an extremely large piece of land, there's flooring, fences, lots of different devices, such as sappers, crap pots, oil makers, etc etc. There's a lot here and it's a massive expansion compared to Rune Factory.
Basically, this is more of a life sim while Rune Factory is more of an RPG.
On the other hand both offer great freedom, which can be hardly found in other games. Even harvest moon feels like a slave driver game by now (damn watering taking up 50% of my time in my first year).
On the whole point of setting i would suggest rune factory 4 is better, since the fantasy universe it is placed in is just superior, yet i do feel more relaxed in stardew.
In terms of gameplay both are great too. If you liked farming in general you will enjoy stardew, only the livestock seems kind of underwhelming. Crops get leveled with fertiliezer, which is fine but rune factory 4 had all those micromanaging aspects of ground quality and whatnot, which was really interesting too. My biggest regret is that you can't grow crops out of season in stardew.
Summerized i would say you should try both and see what you like more yourself. I nearly always play games just because i can and i got to say i enjoy both BIG TIME. They are similiar but not the same. The aspect i am missing in stardew valley is the monster variety, monster taming and the usefullness of livestock. A little bit more micromanagment, like ground quality like in rune factory 4 would not hurt but it is really relaxing to just plant whatever you want, too.
The characters in rune factory 4 feel more alive simply because they have more lines each day but stardew valleys characters have a lot of thought put into them as well.
All in all stardew feels more relaxing and rune factory feels more complex and big but also more rewarding.
While stardew definetly has a few aspects i would have liked to have known before (new locations unlocked, where to find some heart-events, how grass, silos and hay works etc.) it is still relaxing once you get the hang of it, to just farm away and rebuild the community, while rune factory is centered more around the rpg aspects perfectly integrated into farming but with rpg still being the main genre.
I definetly think both of those games, stardew and rune factory 4, made it into my top 10 game easily, stardew valley still rising in rank. Comparing them is hard but there are aspects that are similar. I do think you should try stardew out but without expecting rune factory 5 in there. If you just see it as it is, it is a very good game.
I find myself picking whoever seems the easiest to woo.
I think that has more to do with them not being complete stereotypes, like in the harvest moon games. The girls in Stardew Valley have real personality and grow over time, it just takes a while to get to know them. I'm just mad that all the good girls in the game are taken or "too old". Just like in Rune Factory 3, only in this game the bachelorettes aren't even lolis :(
Other than that, SDV seems overall much nicer, more to do, more charm to everything.
The only thing I wish is that it had the town atmosphere RF4 had, like people audibly greeting you as you run by them the first time a day or things like that ^^
Yup, Leah and Penny are nice enough but Robin and Caroline are clearly superior
